Belgian Study Reveals Obesity Accounts for 8.2% of Deaths Nationwide

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – The Belgian public health institute Sciensano’s recent data indicates that in 2022, obesity was linked to 9,509 fatalities in Belgium, representing 8.2 percent of the country’s total mortality for that year. This report marks the first systematic effort by public health researchers in Belgium to quantify deaths directly attributable to an excessive body mass index across the population. The statistical analysis shows that weight-related health issues caused over one death every hour nationwide, leading to more than 150,000 years of life lost across various demographic groups.

Healthcare professionals evaluate chronic disease risk factors during clinical patient assessments.

An in-depth epidemiological study examined underlying causes of death to understand how high body mass index contributes to chronic illnesses. Results identified cardiovascular problems as the leading cause of death, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 fatalities. Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease and other forms of dementia, were the second most common, with 1,652 deaths. Cerebrovascular diseases caused 1,171 deaths, with chronic kidney disease and various digestive cancers also significantly contributing to mortality figures.

Data segmented by demographics reveals that the risk of death linked to excess weight rises markedly with age. The highest rates of health complications related to obesity appeared among those aged 65 and older. Gender comparisons show that male mortality rates surpass female rates across most age groups. Nonetheless, for those aged 85 and above, women recorded higher overall death numbers, a trend attributed to their longer average life expectancy, according to epidemiologists.

Belgian Research Finds Obesity Responsible for 8.2% of Deaths

Regional disparities in mortality rates associated with excessive weight are prominent within Belgium. The southern region of Wallonia experienced the highest death rate, with 95.21 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The Brussels-Capital Region followed with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 residents. Flanders registered the lowest impact, with 73.60 deaths per 100,000 residents. Experts note that these variations reflect differences in socioeconomic status, dietary habits, and healthcare access across the country’s regions.

The release of this information coincides with health policy reviews led by the Federal Public Service Health, which manages Belgium’s national health initiatives. Officials are leveraging the findings to evaluate the long-term economic strain caused by chronic non-communicable diseases. The researchers employed a comparative risk assessment approach, calculating the population attributable fraction for each disease and establishing baseline estimates to support future preventative health strategies.

Methodology Uses Comparative Risk Assessment to Quantify Years of Life Lost

At the European level, organizations such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor similar metabolic risk factors to coordinate policy responses. The Belgian report aligns with broader EU health objectives aimed at reducing early death from non-communicable diseases. The World Health Organization continues to advocate for integrated, multi-sectoral strategies that include public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical intervention to address metabolic risks.

These findings provide a solid empirical basis for health authorities working to reduce the prevalence of high body mass index in Western Europe. Quantifying both total mortality and years of life lost enables policymakers to prioritize screening, intervention programs, and lifestyle initiatives. As regional and national health agencies analyze these results, emphasis is expected to shift towards early prevention efforts to decrease chronic disease rates across the country.
