SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is expanding access to ChatGPT by offering Free and Go users unlimited text interactions with GPT-5.6 Luna. The company indicated that this change will take effect next week and will be subject to safeguards to prevent misuse. During the current rollout, GPT-5.6 Luna is also becoming the default model for these accounts. Additionally, free users will get a Think button, enabling the system to dedicate more time to complex questions before generating a response.

This new feature applies solely to text-based chats and does not eliminate all usage restrictions across ChatGPT. OpenAI clarified that limitations will still be in place for file uploads, image generation, and other tools that require extra processing power. The Think feature will be introduced alongside unlimited text messaging next week, giving GPT-5.6 Luna more reasoning capacity for tasks that demand thorough analysis. The company continues to enforce separate controls on features outside of standard text conversations, including tools accessible under different usage allowances.

OpenAI introduced GPT-5.6 as a series of models, including Luna, Sol, and Terra. Luna is positioned as the faster and more cost-effective choice within this lineup. The company stated that ChatGPT now has approximately one billion weekly users engaged in searches, research, planning, writing, and other activities. With this latest update, users on Free and Go plans will see Luna as their primary ChatGPT model. The rollout broadens access to the core chat service while maintaining tool-specific limits.

Paid subscriptions receive an enhanced reasoning model

Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro are also getting access to an upgraded version of GPT-5.6 Sol for daily use. Sol supports quick replies and deeper reasoning within the paid experience. OpenAI mentioned that this update results in more focused responses and reduces unnecessary details when a simpler answer suffices. Paid users will also get a reasoning slider across web, mobile, and desktop, allowing them to control how much processing ChatGPT applies to research, planning, coding, writing, and other tasks.

The company noted a decrease in factual inaccuracies in its internal evaluations of the latest models. These tests involved financial, medical, and legal prompts requiring detailed factual responses. OpenAI reported that answers containing at least one factual error decreased by roughly 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. For GPT-5.6 Sol, the reduction was around 68%. Additionally, Sol demonstrated improved handling of dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when these details are critical to the answer.

Unlimited chat access retains safety restrictions

OpenAI stated that its latest ChatGPT models incorporate extra safeguards for users under 18. These measures aim to prevent romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that could replace real-world relationships. Boundaries also address sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted products, and graphic violence. The company added new evaluations to monitor responses involving younger users. Despite offering unlimited text conversations, these will continue to operate within the same safeguards when access expands to Free and Go accounts.

This update focuses on the core ChatGPT experience rather than all OpenAI products utilizing GPT-5.6 models. OpenAI clarified that GPT-5.6 Sol versions used in ChatGPT Work and Codex will not change with this update. Current paid users can access the revised Sol model and reasoning controls immediately. Meanwhile, Free and Go users will see Luna as their default model this week. The unlimited text chats and Think button will be introduced next week, with separate limits still in place for images, uploads, and other tools.
