(Credit – WAM) Architecturally, the museum features 30 indoor galleries offering 11,600 square metres of exhibition space, complemented by 23,000 square metres of outdoor display zones. A central atrium links these areas, with ten sculptural cones defining the skyline—nine covered in stainless steel mesh and one finished with onyx and glass. These cones, reaching heights of up to 88 metres, are functional as well as aesthetic; they harness natural breezes and provide shade, employing passive cooling strategies that mitigate energy use in the desert climate. The institution also includes a dedicated centre for art and technology, specialized educational facilities for children, historical archives, a research library, and a cutting-edge conservation laboratory. Since beginning its acquisition efforts in 2009, the museum has built a comprehensive permanent collection that bridges local, regional, and international artistic trends. Its thematic displays, rather than strict chronological order, explore transregional stories spanning geographies, generations, and mediums from the mid-twentieth century to today. The collection reflects the United Arab Emirates’s historical position at the crossroads of global trade and cultural exchange across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. By creating links between different artistic voices, the museum provides visitors with innovative perspectives on contemporary global art history.
