DR Congo Declares Largest-Ever Ebola Outbreak Officially Recognized

KINSHASA, DR CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The Ebola epidemic in DR Congo has expanded to become the country’s most extensive recorded outbreak. As of July 30, authorities confirmed 3,605 cases, which included 1,587 fatalities. The overall case fatality rate was 44%. During the latest full reporting week, teams documented 567 new infections and 296 deaths, marking the highest weekly totals since the outbreak’s inception and indicating ongoing virus transmission.

DR Congo faces its largest recorded Ebola outbreak
Health teams track Ebola transmission across 49 health zones in DR Congo.

Currently, the outbreak affects 49 health zones across five provinces, namely Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, and Tshopo. In the recent seven-day period, 33 zones reported active transmission, with 641 cases and 282 deaths. Ituri remains the epicenter, recording 3,176 infections, which accounts for 88% of the national total. Bunia experienced the highest local caseload, followed by Rwampara, Mongbwalu, Nizi, Lita, and Nyankunde.

The World Health Organization classifies the risk within DR Congo as very high. It also assesses the threat level for neighboring Uganda and other bordering nations as high. Conversely, the threat to the broader African continent and globally is deemed low. Ongoing armed conflict, displacement, and frequent population movements continue to hinder efforts to control the disease. Healthcare teams face challenges including damaged infrastructure, shortages of staff, and restricted access to multiple affected communities.

Response teams broaden contact tracing and patient care efforts

In total, health officials in DR Congo have identified 17,863 contacts across the five affected provinces. Active follow-up is underway for 13,455 individuals, leaving thousands outside regular monitoring protocols. The outbreak has impacted 151 healthcare workers, causing 44 deaths, while 68 have recovered. Authorities are intensifying testing, patient treatment, infection prevention, and community engagement. Support includes safe burial practices, transportation services, supply delivery, and public awareness campaigns in zones with active transmission.

Bundibugyo Ebola transmits through direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, organs, or contaminated materials. Symptoms can manifest between two and 21 days post-exposure. Patients are not contagious before symptoms appear. Early indications include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headaches, and sore throat. Currently, no approved vaccine or specific treatment exists for the Bundibugyo strain. Rapid testing, isolation, supportive care, contact tracing, and safe burials are crucial tools to curb transmission.

    Border surveillance remains vigilant

The outbreak was designated an international public health emergency on May 17, with the World Health Organization declaring a continental emergency the following day. Uganda declared the end of its domestic outbreak on July 28 after 42 days without local transmission. Despite this, authorities maintain enhanced surveillance as crossings between eastern DR Congo and Uganda are frequent. Continued screening, laboratory preparedness, and readiness measures are active in border areas linked to affected communities.

By July 30, confirmed cases across all impacted nations totaled 3,626, with 1,589 deaths. DR Congo reported 3,605 cases, Uganda 20, and France one. Recoveries included at least 651 patients in DR Congo and 18 in Uganda. Two patients in DR Congo were diagnosed before receiving treatment in Germany. Most cases and fatalities are concentrated in eastern DR Congo, where teams persist in surveillance, treatment, and community outreach efforts.
