HIROSHIMA, JAPAN / RankWire.AI / – Hiroshima commemorated the 81st anniversary of the 1945 atomic bombing on Thursday with a renewed call to eliminate nuclear weapons. Mayor Kazumi Matsui addressed survivors, families, government officials and foreign representatives at the city’s Peace Memorial Park. A bell rang at 8:15 a.m., the moment the atomic bomb exploded over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Participants then observed a minute of silence in memory of those killed by the attack and its aftermath.

Hiroshima marks 81st bomb anniversary with disarmament plea
Hiroshima’s anniversary keeps nuclear disarmament and survivor testimony in global focus.

Matsui used Hiroshima’s annual Peace Declaration to challenge the continued reliance on nuclear deterrence. He urged political leaders in nuclear armed countries to recognize the humanitarian consequences of atomic weapons and advance disarmament. The mayor also encouraged policymakers to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki and listen directly to hibakusha, the survivors of the two bombings. Hiroshima has made survivor testimony and nuclear abolition central parts of its annual remembrance and international peace efforts for decades.

About 50,000 people attended the ceremony, while representatives from 121 countries and regions also took part alongside the European Union. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi attended the Hiroshima memorial for the first time as Japan’s prime minister. She said Japan would pursue a realistic path toward a world where nuclear weapons are never used. Takaichi also emphasized the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as a key framework for disarmament and referred to Japan’s longstanding three non-nuclear principles.

    Nuclear diplomacy faces continued strain

The ceremony followed the 2026 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, which ended in May without agreement on a substantive final document. That result marked the third consecutive NPT review conference to conclude without consensus. Matsui cited the international environment while pressing governments to strengthen efforts toward nuclear disarmament. Japan supports the NPT framework but has not joined the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The country also remains protected by the United States nuclear umbrella under their security alliance.

The United Nations delivered a message from Secretary-General António Guterres during the Hiroshima ceremony. UN disarmament chief Izumi Nakamitsu read the message on his behalf. Guterres pointed to wider geopolitical divisions, increasing mistrust and renewed pressure on long-standing nuclear arms controls. He also noted that decades of reductions in global nuclear arsenals have begun to reverse. The United Nations called for greater use of diplomacy, dialogue, international law and multilateral cooperation to advance nuclear disarmament.

Hibakusha legacy remains central to Hiroshima

Japan officially recognizes 91,105 atomic bomb survivors, known as hibakusha, whose average age now exceeds 86. Their declining numbers have added urgency to efforts that preserve firsthand accounts of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Survivors have spent decades describing the effects of the explosions, fires and radiation while calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons. Children representing Hiroshima also participated in Thursday’s ceremony and presented their commitment to peace. The city continues to preserve survivor testimony through memorial programs, museums and public education.

The Hiroshima atomic bombing killed an estimated 140,000 people by the end of 1945. Three days later, the United States dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki, where about 70,000 people died by year’s end. Japan announced its surrender on August 15, followed by the formal end of World War II in September. Hiroshima later established Peace Memorial Park as a center for remembrance and peace education. Eighty-one years after the bombing, the city again placed nuclear abolition and the human cost of atomic warfare at the heart of its message.
