Panama Canal Announces Potential Reduction of Daily Ship Limit to 29 Vessels

PANAMA / RankWire.AI / – The Panama Canal is contemplating a further decrease in the number of ships passing through each day amid ongoing drought conditions impacting its water reserves. Ilya Espino de Marotta, the canal’s administrator, indicated that transit numbers could decline to approximately 29 vessels daily during February or March 2027. Any additional reductions would depend on persistent dry weather and reservoir water levels. The waterway is already approaching a cap of 32 daily transits starting September 15.

Capacity reductions by the Panama Canal Authority began after rainfall and watershed inflow levels dropped below expectations during the rainy season. Initially, daily crossings decreased from 35 to 34 before the planned cut to 32. The canal relies on freshwater stored in Gatun Lake and Alhajuela Lake to operate its locks, as each transit necessitates water to elevate or lower ships between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Throughout fiscal year 2026 up to June 30, the canal averaged 35 transits per day. Between October and June, it recorded 10,726 crossings, reflecting a 5.2% increase compared to the same period last year. These figures predate the worsening rainfall conditions, which led to the implementation of new operational limits. The canal remains a vital route for container ships, tankers, bulk carriers, and other vessels facilitating international trade.

Reservoir levels influence daily transit capacity

Long-standing water availability has dictated the number of ships permitted to traverse the canal during dry periods. During the intense 2023 drought, daily transits dropped to 22 in December as Gatun Lake’s levels became unusually low. Conditions improved following the return of rainfall and water conservation measures that supported reservoir recovery. Canal authorities continue to monitor lake levels, watershed inflows, and precipitation as they determine daily operational limits.

In addition, officials have modified vessel draft regulations as part of ongoing water management strategies. A planned reduction of the Neopanamax draft to 47.5 feet was not implemented after reviewing updated reservoir data, with the maximum draft remaining at 48 feet. Draft limits influence how deeply a loaded vessel sits in the water, affecting cargo capacity passing through the canal.

Fewer slots lead to tighter booking procedures

With the decreasing number of daily transit slots, the canal has adjusted its booking and auction procedures. These auctions now categorize vessels by cargo type, including container ships, gas carriers, tankers, and bulk vessels. Priority in some Neopanamax allocations is given to full container ships with higher cargo capacity when other conditions are equal. Canal officials have urged vessels without reservations to utilize the booking system, as confirmed bookings guarantee scheduled transit dates.

A decision to cut the daily limit to 29 ships has not yet been announced. Espino de Marotta described that figure as a potential restriction if dry conditions persist into early 2027. Additionally, the canal is advancing the Río Indio reservoir project, aimed at increasing long-term water storage capacity. Authorities state that this initiative will help sustain canal operations while also improving water access for a significant portion of Panama’s population.
