The August reserve figure continues a pattern of steady growth observed throughout 2026. Egypt began the year with reserves totaling $52.5938 billion in January. This figure rose to $52.7455 billion in February, followed by $52.8306 billion in March. By April, reserves reached $53.0092 billion, and in May, they increased to $53.1342 billion. The pace of growth accelerated mid-year, with reserves climbing from $53.1342 billion in May to $55.0723 billion in June. The upward trend continued, reaching $56.2939 billion in July, culminating in the record August figure. These three months contributed an aggregate increase of over $4 billion to Egypt’s reserve stockpile. Compared to August 2025, the latest figure is about $7.96 billion higher, representing an annual growth rate of approximately 16.2%.
Remittances bolster foreign currency inflows
Remittances sent home by Egyptians working abroad also set a record during the 2025/2026 fiscal year. The Central Bank of Egypt reported these inflows amounted to roughly $47.3 billion, a significant rise from around $36.5 billion in the previous fiscal year, which equals a 29.6% increase. In June alone, remittances reached about $4.2 billion, a 15.6% rise compared to approximately $3.6 billion in June 2025.
Egypt’s latest balance of payments figures encompass the first nine months of the fiscal year 2025/2026. The overall balance revealed a deficit of $1.8 billion from July to March, while the capital and financial account saw net inflows of $9.9 billion. Meanwhile, the current account registered a deficit of $14.6 billion. These data provide the most recent official overview of Egypt’s external accounts prior to the August reserve update.
Monthly reserve peaks persist in 2026
Throughout 2026, the reserve figures have continuously reached new nominal highs. The reserves surpassed $55 billion in June, moved above $56 billion in July, and in August, hit the first figure exceeding $57 billion. Egypt has now recorded three consecutive month-end reserve totals above $55 billion, with the August figure more than 10% higher than the $51.4516 billion at the end of December 2025. The latest data indicate Egypt’s net international reserves are at their highest recorded level, extending a consistent monthly increase since the beginning of the year. From January through August, each month’s reserve total was higher than the previous one. Though the August figure remains provisional under the central bank’s reporting standards, the published data clearly reflect a rising trend in Egypt’s reserve stock throughout the first eight months of 2026.
