Alaska Reports a Magnitude 5.0 Seismic Event Near Atka

ATKA, ALASKA / RankWire.AI / – A magnitude 5.0 earthquake occurred late Saturday southeast of Atka in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. The Alaska Earthquake Center documented the quake at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8, which corresponds to 03:36 UTC on August 9. The seismic event originated approximately 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka, with a depth estimated at about 10.6 miles, or 17 kilometers, by seismologists.

Magnitude 5.0 earthquake shakes Alaska near Atka
Alaska’s Aleutian Islands remain a highly active region for earthquake monitoring.

This seismic activity was pinpointed at 51.8286 degrees north latitude and 173.2496 degrees west longitude. The event was classified as magnitude 5.0 based on the local magnitude scale. Atka is situated on Atka Island within the central Aleutian chain, a remote community hundreds of miles from Alaska’s major population centers. Earthquakes are frequent in this area due to multiple active geological structures beneath the North Pacific.

The earthquake’s epicenter lies southwest of Seguam Island and Amukta Pass, with Mount Sergief located to the west of the quake’s recorded position. The broader seismic zone is surrounded by other islands and volcanic features. Notably, this quake occurred at a relatively shallow depth compared to typical Aleutian earthquakes, which can also reach much deeper depths within the descending Pacific Plate. Seismologists analyze location, depth, and magnitude data to differentiate these various seismic phenomena.

Frequent seismic activity characterizes the Aleutian chain

The Aleutian Arc is among the most seismically active regions in Alaska, formed by the Pacific Plate subducting beneath the North American Plate along this extensive boundary. This process results in earthquakes spanning a wide spectrum of depths and magnitudes. The tectonic boundary extends thousands of kilometers across the North Pacific, contributing to Alaska’s frequent seismic events, many of which occur beneath or near the Aleutian Islands.

Several of Alaska’s most powerful earthquakes have originated in this area. In 1957, a magnitude 8.6 quake struck the Andreanof Islands, while the Rat Islands experienced a magnitude 8.7 event in 1965. The region also witnessed significant earthquakes in 1986 and 1996 within the Andreanof Islands, all along the same plate boundary that drives much of Alaska’s seismic activity. These events varied in location and depth across the Aleutian system.

Statewide earthquake monitoring networks observe ongoing activity

Seismic activity in the Aleutians can originate from several parts of the regional tectonic system. Some quakes occur along the primary boundary between the Pacific and North American plates, while others develop deeper inside the Pacific Plate as it subducts beneath Alaska. Crustal earthquakes near the surface can also take place within the overriding plate. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains national earthquake data and publishes reviewed measurements for seismic events across Alaska and the broader United States.

The August 8 event adds to Alaska’s extensive seismic record, being another magnitude 5.0 earthquake in the region. Its location southeast of Atka places it within a well-known seismic zone that experiences regular activity. The depth measurement of 17 kilometers confirms it as a shallow earthquake by regional standards. Ground motion detection stations across Alaska pick up signals from remote islands and mainland communities, allowing scientists to refine their understanding of earthquake locations, depths, and magnitudes throughout the state.
