Many regions at lower altitudes also faced a stretch of 10 to 14 days with temperatures above 30 degrees.
Researchers from the University of Graz’s Wegener Center estimated that the heatwaves in June and late July resulted in approximately €1.4 billion in socioeconomic losses. This figure accounts for health impacts, decreased productivity in the workforce, agricultural damages, infrastructure strain, and increased cooling demands. It also factors in pressures on ecosystems and public services. The total does not constitute an official government damage assessment and differs from insured-loss figures, which cover only claims filed with insurance providers.
Heat intensity surpasses previous national record
The research team evaluated the severity of both heatwaves using area-degree days, a metric that combines temperature, duration, and geographic extent. The June event registered around 16,700 area-degree days. Their analysis estimated the late July heatwave between 22,700 and 25,000. The previous Austrian record stemmed from a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which measured approximately 22,100 area-degree days across land regions below 1,500 meters in elevation.
The early summer heat also coincided with a notable increase in heat-related fatalities. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety reported 395 such deaths during June 2026, marking the highest June figure since data collection began. Heat-associated mortality refers to deaths exceeding the expected baseline during extreme temperature periods. It does not necessarily mean that heat was the sole medical cause listed on each death certificate.
Prolonged drought exacerbates pressure across Austria
Prior to the heatwave, Austria faced months of unusually low rainfall. From January 1 to July 27, the country received roughly 426 millimeters of precipitation, compared to the average of 609 millimeters for this period, resulting in nearly a 30% deficit. Authorities described the first seven months of 2026 as the driest since at least the early 20th century. Areas such as Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland experienced some of the most significant rainfall shortages.
The combination of high pressure, intense sunlight, and limited rainfall during late May, June, and July increased evaporation rates. This situation led to reduced soil moisture, placing stress on crops, rivers, forests, and regional water supplies. Climate records indicate that heatwaves in Austria are now more frequent and longer-lasting than in previous decades. The average peak temperatures during heat events have climbed by approximately three degrees from the 1980s to the 2020s. The recent record in July underscores Austria’s ongoing trend of increasingly severe heat extremes.
