MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s electricity generation saw a 4.3% increase year-on-year during the first eight months of 2026. The total volume reached 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours, up from 35,935.3 GWh in the same period of 2025. This rise amounted to roughly 1,546.5 GWh. Early data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated growth in several governorates. In August, production hit 5,743.9 GWh, compared to 5,676.9 GWh in July. Consequently, the country’s total output surpassed its 2025 figures.

Muscat experienced the most significant increase in overall electricity generation, with a jump of 204.8% compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah followed with a 44.1% rise, while Al Wusta saw an 8.4% growth. Production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.5%. Dhofar recorded a 4.6% gain during the same timeframe. The data revealed regional disparities in electricity growth as the national total grew. Several governorates reported higher output during this period.
During the first eight months, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah showed a different trend, with combined electricity production decreasing by 16.4% from the same period in 2025. Musandam generated 376.0 GWh, maintaining roughly the same level as the previous year. The regional figures demonstrated increases in most areas covered by the national data. Overall, Oman’s electricity output remained above the 2025 level through August. These figures encompass production from January to August 2026.
Electricity Generation Sees Growth Across Oman
Net electricity output also experienced an increase during the January to August interval. It grew by 4.6% to reach 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh in the previous year. This measure accounts for purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat led the net growth with a rise of 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah increased by 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar recorded gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. The overall national increase was approximately 1,592.1 GWh.
North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah collectively saw a 5.4% rise in net electricity production. Meanwhile, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6%. Musandam’s net output stood at 368.0 GWh, with an annual change rate of 0.0%. Overall, Oman’s net electricity generation remained above the comparable period of 2025. The regional trends closely reflected the movements in total electricity output, with several governorates showing increased net production over the eight months.
Water Production Drops by August 2026
Water production in Oman decreased over the same eight-month span. Total output fell by 3.5% to 330.65 million cubic metres from roughly 342.71 million in the previous year. Muscat’s water output declined by 6.2% to around 128.07 million cubic metres, compared with about 136.57 million during the same period of 2025. Other governorates saw a 3.4% decrease, with production dropping to approximately 149.90 million cubic metres from 155.19 million cubic metres a year earlier.
Dhofar bucked the national trend, recording a 3.4% increase to about 52.68 million cubic metres from roughly 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest figures illustrate that electricity and water metrics moved in opposite directions across Oman through August 2026. While electricity generation increased both overall and net levels, water production overall declined despite Dhofar’s positive result. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classifies these figures as preliminary.
