Indonesia Aims to Save US$10.8 Billion Through B50 Biodiesel Initiative

JAKARTA, INDONESIA / RankWire.AI / – The B50 biodiesel program in Indonesia is projected to conserve approximately 170 trillion rupiah, or US$10.8 billion, in foreign exchange in 2026, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. This forecast is based on reduced expenditure on imported diesel due to the national fuel blend increasing to 50% biodiesel. The regulation applies to diesel used in transportation, industrial activities, shipping, rail systems, and electricity generation. The renewable component is derived from palm oil, while traditional diesel constitutes the remaining half. The initiative replaces part of Indonesia’s reliance on fossil fuels with domestically produced biofuel.

Indonesia targets US$10.8 billion savings with B50 biodiesel
B50 biodiesel expands palm-based fuel demand across Indonesia’s national energy market.

Indonesia began nationwide B50 implementation on July 1, with the official mandate unveiled on July 9 in Karawang, West Java. It succeeded the B40 program, which mandated a 40% biodiesel blend since 2025. B50 comprises equal parts fatty acid methyl ester, also known as FAME, and petroleum diesel. This increased requirement channels more palm oil into Indonesia’s domestic fuel market. Distributors are allowed to utilize remaining B40 inventories until September while transitioning fully to B50. Prior to the rollout, authorities introduced updated fuel standards and distribution strategies.

The foreign exchange savings from B40 was estimated at Rp133.3 trillion by the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. The B50 forecast raises this figure to Rp170 trillion for 2026. Officials also anticipate the mandate to reduce fossil diesel consumption by roughly 4 million kilolitres. Pertamina has been designated to oversee blending operations and support fuel distribution nationwide. The company is also responsible for managing storage and supply within the program’s coverage areas. The rollout incorporates technical standards for production, transportation, and retail distribution.

B50 Policy Boosts Domestic Biodiesel Demand

Indonesia projects that B50 will require between 16.7 million and 18 million kilolitres of biodiesel. This exceeds the 15.64 million kilolitres allocated under the B40 scheme for 2026. The mandate will also utilize an estimated 15.2 million to 16.3 million tonnes of crude palm oil. These quantities are intended for use in road vehicles, industrial machinery, ships, trains, and power plants. The volume estimates are based on projected national demand under the new blend ratio.

The government’s projections suggest an added value of Rp23.49 trillion for Indonesia’s palm oil sector. Employment support is estimated at approximately 2.1 million jobs across farming, processing, logistics, and fuel distribution sectors. Officials also believe B50 could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 44.46 million tonnes, compared to 39.66 million tonnes for B40. These figures are part of the ministry’s comprehensive assessment of the higher biodiesel blend, covering the entire program rather than specific regions or sectors.

Pre-Deployment Testing for B50 Conducted in Indonesia

Prior to the nationwide rollout, the government conducted testing of B50 in various vehicles and machinery, including cars, trucks, mining equipment, agricultural machinery, trains, ships, and power generators. Light vehicles underwent testing over 50,000 kilometers, while heavier vehicles completed over 40,000 kilometers. Mining equipment was tested for around 1,000 operating hours without significant engine issues related to the fuel quality. The Ministry confirmed that the tested fuel complied with government standards and the technical requirements set by manufacturers. These trials were completed before the official launch in July.

Indonesia has progressively increased its biodiesel standards since introducing B2.5 in 2008. The country moved to B10 in 2013, B20 in 2018, B30 in 2020, B35 in 2023, and B40 in 2025. The B50 target represents the latest step in this sequence. Each transition required modifications to fuel standards, production capacity, storage, and distribution infrastructure. The 2026 program now mandates an equal mix of biodiesel and conventional diesel in Indonesia’s fuel supply.
