KATHMANDU, NEPAL / RankWire.AI / – Nepal has projected that restoring areas affected by the August 26 Bhote Koshi floods will cost approximately $4.78 billion. According to the government’s Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment, physical damages are estimated at around $1.8 billion, while economic losses are roughly $883 million. The evaluation covers social services, productive sectors, and key infrastructure. Floodwaters impacted Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and other regions along the river system, damaging homes, roads, bridges, and energy facilities.

The government anticipates that immediate recovery and reconstruction will require about $57.67 million over the next six months. The longer-term rebuilding efforts are expected to account for roughly $4.71 billion of the total needed. Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the authorities have distributed the rapid assessment findings among relevant agencies. An extensive Post Disaster Needs Assessment is still underway, which will offer a more comprehensive picture of the losses and recovery needs. Recovery activities are ongoing across the transport, electricity, and telecommunications networks in districts affected by flooding.

Initial government data indicates significant damage to communities and infrastructure. Approximately 7,570 homes have been affected, impacting about 32,933 individuals. Additionally, authorities reported damage to 48 government offices. Floodwaters have caused destruction over 55 kilometers of roads, 37 motorable bridges, and 68 suspension bridges. Around 1,806 hectares of agricultural land have also suffered losses. The energy sector experienced major setbacks, including damage to 13 hydropower projects, one solar plant, and two transmission lines.

Flooding Disrupts Transportation and Power Supplies

Government assessments estimate that approximately 783 megawatts of hydropower capacity have been affected by the disaster. Damaged roads and bridges have also hindered access to multiple communities. Efforts to clear routes and restore critical transport links are ongoing. An Acrow bridge over the Tadi River at Devighat has been opened for public use following its installation. Authorities have also been working to remove debris and reopen blocked roads. Nepal has relied on domestic resources while also receiving international aid for emergency response and recovery efforts.

Search and rescue operations continue alongside infrastructure repairs. By September 11, authorities had rescued 13,676 individuals, including more than 320 foreigners. Still, around 5,130 people remain listed as missing, with approximately 600 foreigners from about 35 countries among them. Recovery teams have recovered 1,385 bodies. Officials caution that casualty and missing person counts may change as identification efforts proceed. Forensic experts are assisting Nepal Police and other agencies with DNA collection, analysis, and identification of recovered remains.

Damage Assessment Shapes Broader Recovery Planning

Debris removal has become a critical component of the recovery process. The United Nations Development Programme estimated that at least 2.2 million tonnes of debris are present in the areas surveyed. Its initial review indicates that 11 hydropower stations and one solar facility have ceased operation, with a combined capacity of 431.1 megawatts. The assessment also identified damage to 15 ongoing power projects, which together had a planned capacity of 470 megawatts. The total damage figure of $4.78 billion remains Nepal’s primary official estimate for reconstruction, as the comprehensive national assessment is still in progress. Authorities continue to conduct search operations, restore infrastructure, and provide relief to affected communities. The government has also requested specialized equipment such as drones, bridge systems, testing kits, and pumping devices. Officials note that the full scope of damage, economic losses, and rebuilding needs will become clearer once the broader assessment is completed after this recent flood crisis.
