Wall Street Gains as Bond Yields Drop and Healthcare Stocks Rally Following Key Announcements

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Wednesday, U.S. equity markets closed higher, buoyed by a significant decline in long-term Treasury yields and a surge in healthcare shares. The S&P 500 increased by 16.22 points, or 0.21%, finishing at 7,707.98. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 119.65 points, or 0.22%, ending at 53,463.05. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite gained 41.38 points, or 0.16%, reaching 26,331.09. These gains ended a three-day losing streak for all three major U.S. indexes.

Wall Street rebounds on lower yields and healthcare surge
U.S. stocks gained as lower long-term Treasury yields eased pressure on major indexes.

Much of the trading activity was driven by the bond market after the U.S. Treasury Department announced increased liquidity support buybacks for longer-dated securities. Effective September 9, the maximum purchase size will rise to at least $4 billion per operation from $2 billion. This increase applies specifically to nominal coupon bonds in the 10-to-20-year and 20-to-30-year maturity ranges. The department stated that these larger purchases would continue through November 4 and follow robust volumes of high-quality offers.

Following the announcement, Treasury yields declined as bond prices rose. The 10-year benchmark yield fell to around 4.65%, and the 30-year yield decreased to roughly 5.20%. Notably, the 30-year yield had climbed to 5.337% on Tuesday, marking its highest level since 2007. The drop in yields alleviated some of the pressure exerted by rising borrowing costs on equities. This movement also contributed to Wall Street’s recovery from earlier losses earlier in the week.

Healthcare Sector Rallies Bolster Market Support

Healthcare stocks received a boost after Moderna and Merck announced positive results from late-stage melanoma studies. Moderna shares soared 177%, while Merck increased by 12.6% during trading hours. Their Phase 3 INTerpath-001 trial evaluated intismeran autogene combined with Keytruda following surgery for patients with high-risk melanoma. The trial met its primary endpoint for recurrence-free survival, and a key secondary endpoint assessing metastasis-free survival was also achieved.

Additionally, consumer stocks posted gains following quarterly reports from several major companies. Estée Lauder jumped over 16% after releasing its earnings. Target and Lowe’s also saw increases after publishing their latest financial results. Smaller-cap stocks outperformed larger indexes, with the Russell 2000 rising about 0.5%. These movements helped extend the market’s recovery beyond the healthcare sector. Mixed results from technology stocks, however, limited the overall gains in the main indexes.

Major Indices Still End the Week Lower

Despite the positive finish on Wednesday, the three primary U.S. stock indexes remained down for the week through the close. The Nasdaq declined approximately 1.5%, the S&P 500 was roughly 1% below its Friday close, and the Dow was down about 0.5%. The market’s rebound followed several sessions marked by rising long-term yields that weighed on stock valuations and prompted cautiousness among investors across major sectors.

As of Wednesday’s close, the major averages remained firmly positive for 2026. The S&P 500 had gained roughly 12.6% since the start of the year, the Dow had increased about 11.2%, and the Nasdaq was up around 13.3%. The session represented a modest recovery, supported by falling Treasury yields and strong healthcare earnings. Notably, the U.S. Treasury Department’s buyback announcement and the melanoma trial results served as the clearest market catalysts throughout the day.
