WTO Announces Inaugural World Trade and Tech Day Focused on AI and Inclusive Trade Policies

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / RankWire.AI / – The World Trade Organization is set to host its first-ever World Trade and Tech Day on September 14 at its headquarters in Geneva. This event aims to assemble trade officials, technology policymakers, business leaders, and other stakeholders. Under the theme, “AI and Trade: Turning Potential into Progress,” the discussions will center on artificial intelligence and its impact on international commerce. The agenda emphasizes developing policies that broaden access to AI tools and promote more inclusive global trade.

WTO event links AI policy with inclusive global trade
Geneva talks will examine how AI can lower trade costs and widen digital market access.

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will welcome attendees to the event. A ministerial dialogue will explore the rising significance of artificial intelligence as a key trade policy issue. The program will also feature a keynote speech and a panel discussion with representatives from the private sector. Topics will include digital services, intellectual property, technical standards, and the involvement of developing economies in AI-related value chains. These sessions aim to connect technology policy with the practical needs of cross-border business activities.

The World Trade Report 2025 will serve as a crucial reference for the day’s proceedings. According to WTO modeling, artificial intelligence could boost global trade by as much as 37% by 2040, while potentially increasing global gross domestic product by up to 13%. The realization of these benefits will depend heavily on infrastructure development, skill acquisition, technology adoption, and policy frameworks. The report also highlights that uneven access to AI technologies may restrict participation for lower-income economies.

    Trade policy takes center stage

Multiple sessions will investigate how AI can reduce the costs associated with international trade. Attendees will examine tools that assist companies with document processing, compliance management, and supply chain analysis. Additionally, the agenda will explore digital services and the legal aspects of intellectual property. A further focus will be on how technical standards can promote compatibility across different markets. These discussions reflect the expanding role of AI in customs procedures, logistics, finance, and other trade-related services.

The event will also address the challenges that hinder the broader adoption of artificial intelligence. Many enterprises still face issues such as unreliable connectivity, limited computing resources, shortage of skilled personnel, and lack of affordable financing. Smaller firms often encounter legal and technical hurdles when accessing digital markets. During a June discussion on AI and trade, WTO’s small-business group examined these barriers and reviewed how emerging tools could enhance market research, lower costs, and improve access to trade information.

    Showcasing practical AI applications

The World Trade and Tech Day will include an exhibition showcasing artificial intelligence solutions for international trade. A pitching session will feature tools designed for companies, government agencies, and trade organizations. These demonstrations aim to bridge policy conversations with real-world applications, illustrating how AI can support supply-chain analysis, regulatory tasks, and market data access. Participants will see examples of systems already operational in trade functions.

Scheduled for September 14, the event will be held at the World Trade Organization’s headquarters in Geneva. Its program combines ministerial panels, industry insights, policy discussions, and technology showcases. The focus will be on artificial intelligence, reducing trade costs, digital services, and economic participation. Additionally, the event will examine the infrastructure and skillsets necessary for wider AI adoption. Details on registration and online participation are available on the official event webpage.
