Michigan Announces First Fatalities Linked to 2026 Cyclospora Outbreak

MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – Michigan health authorities have confirmed that two deaths are connected to the state’s 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported a total of 11,234 cases as of August 3. Through July 30, the state also documented 193 hospitalizations. Both individuals had serious underlying health conditions. Officials indicated that cyclosporiasis and dehydration might have influenced those conditions but did not release further personal details.

Michigan reports first deaths tied to cyclospora outbreak
Health officials track 11,234 Michigan cyclospora cases and 193 hospitalizations.

The symptoms in the two affected patients appeared prior to the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledged the deaths in an update on August 3. They characterized both cases as cyclosporiasis-related deaths involving individuals with pre-existing health issues. Variations in total counts between state and federal agencies exist due to different reporting approaches. Michigan’s tally includes all cases recorded during its investigation, whereas federal numbers typically reflect laboratory-confirmed infections.

Federal authorities remain engaged in an investigation into a separate nine-state outbreak associated with iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico. By July 24, officials identified 1,947 cases linked to exposure at Taco Bell, with at least 98 patients hospitalized. The illness onset dates ranged from June 22 to July 20. Initially, the detailed federal count did not include Michigan’s two deaths, but officials confirmed these after the update.

Recall Eliminates Contaminated Iceberg Lettuce from Markets

Taylor Farms de Mexico withdrew iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market. This recall affected several food-service products and certain Marketside lettuce sold at Walmart stores. Retail products impacted included iceberg salads and shredded iceberg lettuce with use-by dates from July 18 through August 3. Between June 29 and July 16, Taylor Fresh Foods distributed the recalled lettuce to 27 states. Taco Bell ceased using the supplier’s lettuce on July 17.

While Michigan has not linked every reported case to the recalled lettuce, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services still considers lettuce or salad greens as potential sources. Investigators have yet to identify a specific product, farm, or supplier responsible for the entire state outbreak. Additionally, the two deaths have not been directly connected to any particular recalled item. Federal officials emphasize that the current iceberg lettuce cluster is only a part of the nationwide cyclosporiasis investigation.

Cyclospora Infection May Persist for Several Weeks

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite responsible for causing cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection. Typically, individuals become infected after consuming contaminated food or water. Symptoms often include frequent watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, bloating, and fatigue. These symptoms generally emerge about one week after exposure, although the timing can differ. Without proper treatment, the illness may last longer than a month and could reoccur after temporary improvement.

Health authorities recommend that consumers discard any recalled iceberg lettuce or return it to the point of purchase. They also advise washing containers and surfaces that have come into contact with the product. Individuals experiencing symptoms should seek medical advice, especially if they have recently consumed iceberg lettuce. Older adults and those with underlying health issues are at greater risk of dehydration. Michigan health officials are still updating case totals as local and state investigators review additional reports.
