Brussels, Belgium / EuroWire / – Belgian consumer prices experienced an unexpected rise in July, with the annual inflation rate climbing to 3.56%, according to data released by Belgium. This marks a reversal of the recent slowdown and adds pressure on household budgets and business costs. Statbel, the country’s official statistical authority, published monthly consumer index figures showing that Belgium’s inflation rate surpassed earlier predictions, increasing from 3.40 percent in June. The latest report exceeded the 3.37 percent forecast by the Federal Planning Bureau, highlighting ongoing inflationary pressures across sectors such as recreation, utilities, and transportation. On a monthly basis, the consumer price index rose by 0.63 percent, reaching 103.60 points, up from 102.95 points in June, a 0.65 point increase.

This July increase follows several months marked by considerable fluctuations in consumer prices. The annual inflation rate hit 4.01 percent in April before peaking at 4.08 percent in May, largely driven by disruptions in international energy markets related to conflicts in the Middle East. Although the rate slowed to 3.40 percent in June, renewed upward movement in fuel, electricity, and summer holiday services caused the inflation rate to climb once again. Core inflation—excluding volatile energy and unprocessed food—also edged higher to 3.13 percent in July from 3.04 percent in June, indicating that inflationary pressures are spreading across a broad range of consumer goods and services.

National statisticians’ sectoral analysis identified energy products and commercial services as the main contributors to the July inflation rise. Energy prices increased by 10.59 percent year-on-year, up from 10.31 percent in June. Electricity rates accelerated sharply, rising by 7.90 percent compared to a 6.20 percent increase in the previous month. Additionally, motor fuel prices surged by 17.40 percent compared to July 2025 levels, driven by higher global crude oil prices. Conversely, natural gas inflation slowed, with the annual rate easing to 10.30 percent in July from 11.70 percent in June, after a monthly decline of 1.70 percent in prices.

During the peak summer holiday period, activities like recreation, transport, and lodging contributed significantly to the overall inflation. Airfare costs rose 16.80 percent compared to July 2025, while hotel and holiday park prices also saw notable monthly increases. The prices of services such as financial and insurance, healthcare, and residential maintenance also registered higher annual rates. Overall services inflation increased to 5.17 percent from 5.10 percent in June. These rises were partially offset by lower prices in consumer technology, including power banks, smartphones, and audio-visual devices, along with seasonal drops in fresh produce prices.

The health index, which functions as the statutory reference for automatic wage adjustments, social benefits, and commercial property rent calculations in Belgium, moved up from 2.99 percent in June to 3.22 percent in July. The smoothed health index reached 100.77 points, approaching key legislative thresholds that determine obligatory pay increases in both the public and private sectors. Analysts highlight that Belgium’s specific legal indexation system ensures that rising consumer prices directly influence labor costs throughout the economy, creating feedback effects that impact corporate pricing strategies and national competitiveness over the medium term.

Energy Price Rebound Evident in Domestic Utility Costs

Eurostat’s preliminary flash estimates confirm the domestic trend, showing Belgium’s Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices climbing to 3.50 percent in July from 3.30 percent in June. This figure remains significantly above the 2.00 percent medium-term inflation target set by the European Central Bank for the Eurozone. Financial experts stress that Belgium’s inflation rate for the year surpasses forecasts, reaching 3.56 percent in July. This supports expectations that regional monetary authorities will maintain a cautious stance on further interest rate cuts until broader European inflation metrics show consistent alignment with central bank goals.

Looking into the second half of 2026, domestic policy agencies anticipate that developments in energy markets and wage indexation mechanics will continue shaping inflation trends. The Federal Planning Bureau maintains its full-year inflation estimate at an average of 3.10 percent for 2026, though ongoing geopolitical tensions and volatile raw material costs remain significant risks. As statutory wage adjustments are implemented over the coming quarters, government regulators and businesses will monitor consumer purchasing power closely alongside broader productivity metrics across the Belgian economy.
